She then dyed her hair purple and adopted a gothic dress code and lifestyle. She moved in with her boyfriend at this time as well. Angelina Jolie’s Preventive Mastectomy and Ovary Removal

Angelina Jolie had medical testing performed and learned that she carries a BRCA1 gene mutation. this greatly increases her risk of developing both breast and ovarian cancers. In 2013, she underwent a surgery that has become a controversial issue. Although not yet diagnosed with breast cancer. as a preventive measure Angelina opted to go under the knife and had a double mastectomy. Although a difficult decision, she decided to be proactive after learning that according to her doctors estimations, she had an eighty-seven percent risk of breast cancer. Post surgery, Angelina Jolie’s risk of breast cancer has now dropped to only five percent. According to Angelina, her main reason for having this surgery is to stay alive for her kids. She wants to raise awareness to let others know there are options.

In 2015, two years after her mastectomy, Angelina Jolie had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as well. Her mother died from ovarian cancer in 2007 and there is a family history of cancer in family. including her grandmother and aunt.. According to her test results and doctors estimations, Angelina Jolie’s risk of ovarian cancer was fifty percent at the time of the BRCA1 testing she had done. She had already decided to have the surgery done, when follow up testing revealed worrying markers that sped up the process. Tests revealed there were no tumors, there was a chance of early stage cancer, and that she was still able to have her ovary and fallopian tubes removed. Angelina Jolie opted to have the surgery done.

She has been very open and honest about her surgeries. She has honestly stated that it was not easy making the decisions to have these surgeries. Jolie has spoken to others that are in the process of making this decision, as well as their family members such as husbands and fathers. She does not believe that everyone with this genetic mutation should rush to surgery. These are major surgeries that can have emotional, psychological, and physical side effects. For example, the removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes forces a woman’s body into instant menopause. She does feel that everyone in this situation should research and explore all of their options, and not feel alone.
